Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un (Arabic: إِنَّا ِلِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ), usually abbreviated simply Istirja (Arabic:ٱسْتِرْجَاع), is a Qur’an mandate for the Muslim community, given in the second surah of the Quran, and means “Truly humans belong to Allah and behold we.” The statement is commonly recited by Muslims, especially when they receive bad news, as a symbol of patience and recognition that God is all-powerful and will not put his believers through more than they can bear.

Muslims frequently repeat this passage from the Quran when they learn of somebody’s funeral. This statement can be used when people are confronted with a disaster.

How to Recite Inna Lillahi Wa Ina Illaihi Raji’un

First and immediately, it is important to understand that saying Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un ( إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is not constrained to recite when a person dies. It can, however, be said in any situation in which you are faced with some type of difficulty or tragedy.

Hadhrat Salma claims that she overheard the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) remark, “A Muslim who recites Inna Lillahi Wa Ina Illaihi Raji’un ( إِنَّا ِلِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ) is never put in hardship, and Allah compensate him for the misery endure.” (Muslim Sahih)

In his Tafseer, Imam Qartbi described how the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) lantern went out. And upon this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un ( إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون). It was questioning when there was any kind of distress or affliction involved. According to the Prophet (PBUH), Everything that causes a Muslim discomfort is considered an ailment. When a catastrophic event occurs. The hadith on Dua is as follow

“When a disaster strikes anyone you, make them speak: ‘Truly, to Allah we belong, and also to Allah we shall be back,” Umar bin Abu Salamah narrated from his mother, Umm Salamah. I want recompense in You for my suffering, so recompense me for it and replace it for me with something greater (Inna Lillahi Wa Ina Illaihi Raji’un. When he was close to death, he said to Allah, “O Allah, replace me for my wife with someone better than me.” “Certainly, we belonged to Allah, and also to Him we shall be back,” Umm Salamah replied when he died.

Inna Lillahi Wa Ina Illaihi Raji’un Meaning

Inna Lillahi Wa Ina Illaihi Raji’un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is a full dua which reminds us that all shall back to Allah the day Of Resurrection and that all of it around us refers to Allah. Every single thing on earth will vanish. This dua encourages us to practice virtues that are the best reward for all believers.
